Earlier I showed you how I went from a stained old tired looking desk to a clean, crisp painted white desk. If you haven’t seen that post check here! Today I want to show you how I transformed the beat up brass knobs and pulls to look
almost brand new! I really loved the look of the knobs and pulls from the original desk and didn’t want to have to search for and purchase new hardware so I decided to DIY it!
Here is where what we are starting with…
With these knobs and pulls…
I used a handheld screwdriver to remove the old hardware from the drawers because my cordless drill was getting too heavy for the position I had to hold it in. 🙂
Once I removed all of the hardware, I rubbed it down with some Brasso Metal Polish to remove as much of the grease and grime from the old handles as possible. Then just rinsed it off with room temperature water.
Nice and shiny, but still beat up. After I rinsed them off, I let them dry on a towel for about 30 minutes.
Once they were all dry, I gave it a little shake with the towel (just to make sure no water was hiding inside the screw holes, laid them out on a piece of cardboard, and gave them a good coat of Rust-Oleum Metallic Gold Spray Paint.
I sprayed them in 2 thin coats, one time like the picture above, and one time like the picture below. I just stood the knobs straight up and flipped the handles over.
I let that paint dry for about 2 hours then gave it a coat of the PolyAcrylic spray. I let the clear coat dry overnight before I screwed them all back onto the drawers. I used the handheld screwdriver to screw them back in and here it is! (PS The pictures were taken around 11 at night so they look really dark.)
I can’t wait to show the finished space! I’m in love with how everything is turning out and now hopefully this space will keep me inspired for lots of new blog ideas in the future!
I hope you enjoyed this DIY, and as always, thanks for stopping by!
